This post is about choosing the most economical water purification system for your home. For information on the importance of drinking pure water, further information can be found in our guide on treating hives and migraines.
A reverse osmosis system is the most cost effective choice if you own your own home, have 2 or more people in your home, or plan to rent a single property for at least a couple of years. RO is a purification technology that pushes water through a series of filters and has the capacity to easily produce pure water for any sized household. Different sized systems are available. RO systems produce waste water in the ratio of about 3:1 waste to drinking however the cost of this waste water only relates to your drinking water production and not from any other water usage such as bathrooms, kitchen sinks, or washing machines. Therefore, the increase in water consumption is widely considered negligible. Filters tend to be self-sufficient and last from 1 to 2 years which is as maintenance free as it gets. The upfront capital purchase and installation cost is very reasonable and will thereafter produce cheap and pure water.
The other option is water distillers which literally boil off water leaving contaminants in a boiling-chamber and condensed water in a side jug. They are portable, have almost no water wastage, and cost around $100. The downside is they take a good couple of hours to produce about a gallon of water which means if you have more than 2 people in your household you are going to struggle with capacity. Realistically you need one cycle per-person per-day, and the boiling process is energy intensive meaning the cost/litre is greater in the long-term. If you need pure water for just yourself and are likely to move within a year then a distiller is the right option. When choosing a distiller ensure that the model has a glass and not a plastic jug. When the water is initially distilled it runs into the jug at a fairly high temperature which will leach potential PCBs from plastic containers defeating the point of the device. It also will insulate your water and prevent it from cooling down. Go with a good stainless steal model with a glass jar every time.
